10 Tips for Surviving
a Bad Boss
Ensures that everyone is on edge in the
office, encouraging petty rivalries. Often barks his
disapproval of you in front of co-workers and tolerates
toxic behavior from your co-workers. He won’t stand
up for you on critical issues, takes credit for your work,
and at the same time, refuses to provide the resources
you need to do a good job. Sound familiar? These are examples of a terrible boss. According to the career
experts at Career Consultants Corp., one can survive a bad boss, but the personal cost
may be high.
-
Don’t quit, unless you can survive
three to five months without a paycheck.
-
Start job hunting. It’s easier
to tolerate bad behavior on a temporary basis.
-
Don’t go over your boss’s
head. Tattle-tails usually get fired.
-
Kill your boss with kindness. Build
the best rapport you can, especially if you may want
a reference later in your career.
-
Respect the title, even if you don’t
respect the person.
-
Manage upward. Create lines of communication
with company managers and possible mentors.
-
Keep your confidence up. Avoid taking
a bad boss personally.
-
Understand how your boss best receives
information, and then rely primarily on that form of
communication.
-
Don't tell it like it is during the
exit interview. Remain calm about why you are leaving
and provide documentation of your boss’s excesses.
-
Never complain about a bad boss during
a job interview.
